YMCA Buffalo Niagara operates Outdoor Adventure Day Camps.  Camp activities include swimming, nature study, hiking, archery, gaga pit games, arts & crafts, and more.

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Lifeguard/Swim Instructor creates a safe and positive atmosphere that welcomes and respects all individuals while promoting and maintaining safe swimming conditions in the pool, on the deck, and in surrounding areas in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures.

   

GENERAL WORK SCHEDULE:

Camp employees are scheduled to work Monday – Friday, up to 40 hours per week.  Must be available to work between the hours of 8:00 am and 4:30 pm.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Maintains active surveillance of the pool area.
  2. Knows and reviews all emergency procedures and responds to emergency situations immediately in accordance with YMCA policies, procedures, and completes related reports as required.
  3. Documents swim lesson skill achievement and attendance. Completes and distributes participant completion forms.
  4. Responds to challenges with possible solutions in a timely manner.
  5. Knows, understands, and consistently applies safety rules, policies, and guidelines for the pool and aquatic area.
  6. Remains calm and objective when under pressure or when challenged by others.
  7. Accurately records pool temperature, pool chemical qualities, and maintains other records as required. Takes appropriate action to resolve issues.
  8. Follows department protocol to clean and disinfect commonly used surfaces. Maintains the cleanliness and organization of program/work areas.
  9. Performs equipment checks and ensures appropriate equipment is available as needed.
  10. Checks the pool for hazardous conditions when arriving.
  11. Maintains all required certifications, attends staff training sessions to practice skills and learn program standard.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Must be at least 16 years old.
  2. American Red Cross or YMCA Lifeguard certification.
  3. American Red Cross, American Heart Association or American Safety & Health Institute BLS for Lifeguards, First Aid, Oxygen Administration certifications.
  4. Ability to maintain certification-level physical and mental readiness.
