Position Summary

Reporting to Team Lead, Recovery Oriented System of Care (ROSC), the Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) utilizes skills and knowledge to provide care for our clients accessing the medically-supported Withdrawal Management program. This role is a part of the integrated Health & Recovery Services team and is responsible for providing trauma-informed nursing care to vulnerable Calgarians. The Licensed Practical Nurse assists these individuals in accepting responsibility for their own health and assists them in achieving their health improvement goals.

Time Commitment

This is a Full Time, 12 Month Contract role

 

48 hours per rotation with 4 days on and 4 days off. Some unusual hours may be required from time to time as the need arises. Schedule may be altered at the discretion of management according to organizational needs and may be subject to change due to the quarterly rotational schedule.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

  • Perform delegated independent nursing functions within the scope of practice as determined by CLPNA and the DI within the individual LPN competence level, as observed by the Nursing Coordinator
  • Assist with Recovery Care Worker duties when time allows
  • Consistently demonstrate the ability to take the initiative to make decisions/choices without direct supervision
  • Be informed of APL routines and maintain standards and knowledge around phlebotomy and lab services
  • Participate in formal and informal health teaching including preventative health concepts concerning Hepatitis A, B, C and AIDS, condom usage, nutrition, STBBI’s, basic sanitation, personal hygiene, post-op, and pre-natal care
  • Maintain and ensure best practices around the handling of medications, participates in the maintenance of medication administration, storage, and documentation procedures
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory standards (SDS, OH&S, WHMIS)
  • Organize job functions and work area to be able to effectively complete assignments within established time frames
  • Provide culturally aware support to DI clients, celebrating the diversity of clients and being aware of power dynamics of privilege and oppression that may be present while respecting and protecting the rights of clients, including their right to independence, autonomy, and self-determination; their right to choose and practice individual values, beliefs, religion, and culture; their right to privacy and dignity
  • Ensure all required data is entered accurately into organizational databases including the DI Guestbook Database, and client Electronic Medical Records (EMR) and referrals provided in accordance to DI policy and professional nursing standards
  • Develop and maintain collaborative and accountable working relations with internal DI colleagues to strengthen communication flow and cross-program understanding
  • Provide caring, reliable, trauma-informed care to all patients & clients accessing the DI to reduce barriers to service and increase community trust
  • Conduct assessments, initiatives, and implement health management strategies; provide appropriate evaluation, follow-up, and modifications to care plans according to practice protocols; assist with the delivery of disease management and health promotion; implement strategies for improving the quality and provision of care
  • Coordinate services with other team members and community resources according to policies, procedures, and established standards
  • Practice the strength of asking for help
  • Perform other related tasks that are approved by the designated Nursing Coordinator, Senior Manager, Health Services, and the Directors of The DI

Required Competencies and Qualifications

  • Current registration as an LPN with the CLPNA and proven experience as an LPN
  • Ability to work in a diverse care setting with a multidisciplinary team
  • Display compassion always, with a commitment to standards and process
  • Completion of a university, college or other approved Practical Nursing program is required
  • Mental Health and Addictions experience required
  • Experience in acute care is an asset
  • Current CPR - HCP certification is required
  • Energetic and self-directed, with effective time management and organizational skills including the ability to deal with several priorities at the same time
  • Strong strategically focused analytical skills, good common sense; and capacity to provide leadership
  • Well-developed inter-personal and conflict resolution and negotiating skills
  • Excellent communications skills, both oral and written
  • Computer skills including familiarity with word processing, database, and Internet

Working Conditions
 
Front-line staff are exposed to emotionally disturbing events, such as: medical distress, threatened/actual serious injury, violence, abuse, and death; where clients may be experiencing fear, terror, hopelessness, rage, self-harm and conflict. It is understood and accepted that you will be working in distress and/or high-stress situations, which may include emergency response where resiliency and stress tolerance and the ability to maintain composure, remain calm and focused is imperative. Exposure to bodily fluids may also occur.
