Senior Staff Writer - The War Zone

Summary: 

The War Zone, a leading source of defense and military technology news and analysis, is seeking a Senior Staff Writer to join its expert team of journalists. We’re looking for someone who can contribute to and enhance The War Zone’s coverage of air, sea, space, land, and cyber domains of warfare, as well as the geopolitical conditions that lead to or are a result of conflict. The site, which boasts millions of readers a month and the most dedicated audience in the space, is seeking a reporter who can go deeper than brief dispatches and shallow headlines to truly explain the world of defense. 

The right candidate will occasionally be motivated to help build a site that covers warfare, geopolitics, and military technology in new and exciting ways. We are looking for candidates in either of two primary roles:

1.) Pentagon correspondent. This candidate would already be established on this beat with strong relationships in the building and throughout the Department Of Defense. 

2.) Defense technology writer — domain specific. This candidate would have an established beat already focused on a domain of warfare (air, sea, land, space, cyber) or service specific. Note that we do not generally cover social and non combat-related policy or news aspects of the military, so a clear general understanding of the technology and hardware is key.

The Responsibilities:

• A competitive desire to tell defense and national security stories better than other outlets
• Pitch, research and write authoritative, in-depth, daily stories for The War Zone in a timely manner
• Develop longer features and assist in the development and execution of editorial initiatives and projects
• Stay up-to-date on industry trends and best practices, and make recommendations for improvements to the publication's editorial processes
• Look for ways to expand the site’s many coverage areas including media events and conferences
• Get involved with potential future off-platform projects, such as podcasts, video and newsletters
• Work as part of a highly collaborative team to produce the site on a daily basis
• Develop and maintain relationships with sources and industry contact to ensure a steady flow of high-quality content

The Qualifications:

• At least 3-5 years of writing experience on a defense-centric or national security beat
• Clear, concise, accurate writing, as well as the ability to meet deadlines and develop sources
• A strong sense of journalism ethics
• Experience with copy editing, fact-checking, interfacing with Defense Department public affairs officials, and story lead curation an absolute must

The Person:

• A love for working with a small, high energy, dedicated team in a fast-paced collaborative environment
• A strong understanding of online journalism, including success metrics, effective headlines, speed to publishing and using social media to develop story leads 
• An eye for great stories and angles from which to report those stories, as well as a knack for developing sources
• A strong sense of skepticism and a desire to serve readers above all other interests
