Description:
 

This technician position tests, evaluates and repairs electronic systems, components, and modules on lynx buses and support vehicles. At times assists higher grade technicians and trains lower grade technicians with inspecting, removing, and minor repairs to electronic controlled devices and systems on revenue buses and support vehicles. Systems include, but are not limited to, GFI fareboxes, destination signs, Talking Bus, logic and digital equipment, digital video recorder systems, 2-way radios, APC, PLC, CAD/AVL and other electronic systems.

 

This position is considered safety-sensitive and subject to the provisions of the Substance Abuse Program Policy for Safety Sensitive Positions.

 

Essential Functions:

  • Tests, evaluates and repairs electronics for GFI, Digital Surveillance Systems, destination signs, two-way radios and other electronic systems on board revenue buses and support vehicles.
  • Completes scheduled and non-scheduled maintenance on select electronic systems, subassemblies and control devices on transit coaches and support vehicles for safe operation.
  • Inspects, diagnoses, removes and repairs electronic systems, equipment and devices.
  • Applies electrical theory and related knowledge to test and repair operational electrical and electrical-controlled equipment and circuitry.
  • Adjusts, calibrates, aligns and modifies circuitry and components, and records effects on unit performance.
  • Assists higher grade technicians with Talking Bus program set up and changes.
  • Determines the source of trouble. Analyzes and interprets test data.
  • Records periodic electrical testing, and recommends repairs or replacement of equipment that fails to meet acceptable operational standards.
  • Repairs or replaces defective parts or makes changes as instructed.
  • Uses testing equipment (meters, oscilloscopes, test bench and mock-up).
  • Refers difficult or unusual problems to higher-grade technicians for guidance or repair.
  • Works with lower-grade technicians on difficult or unusual problems.
  • Executes field repairs on road failures as needed.
  • Sets up standard test apparatus or devices, test equipment and circuitry to conduct functional, operational, environmental and live test to evaluate performance and reliability of production models.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned.

Required Qualifications:

  • High School diploma or GED plus two years’ experience in the electronic repair field plus one year of technical school training in electronics plus one year of bench testing experience on the following equipment: Fare Collections Systems, Digital Surveillance Systems, Destination Sign Systems, and Two-way Radio Communications Systems.
  • An equivalent combination of related education, training and experience that demonstrates the knowledge, skills and ability to effectively perform the functions of this position may be considered.
  • A degree in Electronics or Electrical Engineering is helpful but not required.
  • Ability to possess a Florida CDL permit, Class “B” with passenger endorsement and airbrakes prior to hire.
  • Must successfully pass the LYNX CDL training program and obtain your Florida CDL license after hire.

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs):

  • Knowledge of electronics to perform inspections, diagnosis, removal and repair of equipment and systems.
  • Knowledge of testing and repairing of electronic subcomponents including, but not limited to:
  • Fare Collection System - bill transport and validator; coin validator; trim/ticket printer assembly; mother board/controller board; trim; cash box: smart card reader; OCU.
  • Surveillance System – cameras assemblies; IR modules; hard drive testing.
  • Destination Signs – power supplies; processor/controller boards; flip dot controller board; OUC.
  • Two-way Radio System – installation and testing of radio equipment.
  • Talking bus – Installation and testing of stand-alone and ITS talking bus components.
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade.
  • Ability to drive buses, trucks, non-revenue vehicles and equipment into the shop, line and yard.
  • Ability to physically bend, stoop, walk, kneel, stretch and lift up to fifty (50) pounds.
  • Ability to pass a DOT physical and drug screen.
  • Ability to work as a team player.
  • Ability to read electrical wiring diagrams and schematics.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in English, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to work days, nights, weekends and holidays.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to work with commercial cleaners and toxic materials.
  • Ability to work in open bays, inside buses and inside test and repair room.
  • Ability to provide own basic tool set and possess all required tools on tool list by the end of probationary period.
  • Ability to work independently with limited supervision.
  • Ability to exhibit a professional, courteous demeanor.
  • Ability to work in a diverse environment.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with those encountered in the course of work using principles of excellent service.
  • Must maintain a valid Florida CDL license, Class “B” with passenger endorsement and airbrakes.

 

Work Environment and Special Considerations:

  • Employees in this position must comply with all requirements of the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) regarding the testing of safety sensitive-employees. This position is considered safety-sensitive under FTA drug and alcohol regulations (49 CFR Part 655).
  • LYNX provides the community with much needed public transportation, and it is important for the Agency to resume its services as quickly and as safely as possible in the event of any natural, technological, or human-caused emergency or disaster. This position is considered a mission critical member of LYNX’s emergency preparation and response efforts during an emergency or disaster and as such, requires 24-hour availability in the event of an emergency or disaster.
