Volunteer Job Description:

1:1 Match Community Companion Volunteer

 

 

Service: Community Outreach and Disability                                         Program: Albert’s House- 008-078

Status: Long-term                                                                                            Commitment required: 2 - 3 hours/week

Location: Central part of Edmonton- Ottewell area                                Telephone: (780)

When: Monday or Thursday evenings, 5:00 pm – 8:00 pm

 

Accountable To: Team Leader or Volunteer Supervisor

 

 


Purpose of Volunteer Position:

Establish and maintain a one to one support relationship with a developmentally and/or physically disabled adult. Focus should be on introducing and participating in recreation and community activities to enhance the quality of life of the person(s) being supported.

Responsibilities/Tasks:

  • Act as a friendly, positive role model
  • Accompany the individual to church service(s)
  • Assist the person served with the planning and participation in appropriate recreation/leisure and social activities, based on their abilities, interests, limitations, guardian input and service goals
  • Establish regular contact times with the person served and follow through with scheduled visits and re-schedule visits
  • Keep staff informed about recreation/leisure and social activities
  • Maintain relationship boundaries to the volunteer-client role while maintaining confidentiality
  • Document volunteer service hours and activities, issues, concerns, after each visit on Volunteer Hub
  • Attend training as appropriate
  • Represent the Agency in a professional and ethical manner
  • Become aware of and comply with Agency policies and procedures related to volunteering

Desired Skills/Abilities:

  • Previous experience working with adults with disabilities
  • Friendly and positive interpersonal skills
  • Ability to maintain volunteer role boundaries
  • Diverse interests and ability to participate in recreation/leisure activities
  • Knowledge of community resources
  • Patience and flexibility
  • First Aid and CPR training an asset


Expected Outcomes:

Person(s) served life is enhanced through volunteer supported social, recreational, and relationship skills.

 

Volunteer will gain knowledge and experience helping individuals while enjoying leisure and recreation activities. A letter of reference will be provided, as requested.
