About Musqueam

We are traditional hən̓q̓əmin̓əm̓ speaking people. Today, we are a strong, growing community of over 1,300 members. We live on a small portion of our traditional territory, known as the Musqueam Indian Reserve, located south of Marine Drive near the mouth of the Fraser River. The name Musqueam relates back to the River Plant, the name of the plant is məθkʷəy̓. There is a story that has been passed on from generation to generation that explains how we became known as the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam) - People of the River Plant. We have always moved throughout our territory using the resources it provides for fishing, hunting, trapping and gathering. We remain distinct and our cultural practices are strong, despite the devastating impacts of residential schools, colonial laws banning our ceremonies, and other attempts to assimilate our people. Our lands and waters continue to support our cultural and economic practices while serving as a source of knowledge and memory, encoded with our teachings and laws. CENSUS DATA COLLECTOR (Survey interviewer)

2 Full Time Casual Term positions (35 hours/week, with required flexibility)

May - August 2024 (16 weeks anticipated)

Musqueam is hiring 2 Census Data Collectors (also called Survey interviewers) to support outreach for the 2024 Musqueam Census. The Musqueam Census is a survey by Musqueam Administration that gives us a snapshot of households and individuals in our community, about topics like health, housing, jobs, education, language, and other aspects of Musqueam life.

The last Musqueam Census was completed in 2016. We are conducting a new Musqueam Census this year to see what has changed in our community since 2016 and to track progress towards Musqueam’s Comprehensive Community Plan[TVB1] [KC2]  vision and goals – nə́c̓aʔmat tə šxʷqʷeləwən ct (we are one heart and mind).

Position Summary

Reporting to the Community Planner, the Census Data Collectors will engage with Musqueam community members to promote and record responses to the 2024 Musqueam Census. This position is required on a full-time term basis for 16 weeks (4 months). This position is required to work Monday to Friday between 8:30am to 4:30pm with 1 hr unpaid lunch. Flexible work hours will  be required and determined with the employee(s) based on outreach needs.

Census Data Collectors are the face of the census to our community. You will distribute the survey, work with community members to complete the survey, and assist with data input. Responsibilities

• Contact Musqueam members to participate in the Census through door-to-door canvassing on-reserve, telephone calls, mail-outs, social media, and emails
• Conduct surveys with members (over the phone and in-person)
• Transcribe responses to survey questions and input data into survey software
• Promote and raise awareness about the Musqueam Census at community events
• Liaise and work collaboratively with other Census Data Collectors
• Create communications and engagement materials for the Census (such as newsletter notices, social media posts, website content)
• Complete other related administrative duties as required

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Successful completion of high school or an equivalent combination of skills, knowledge, and experience
• Reliable and self-motivated
• Respectful, open listener and clear communicator
• Ability to maintain confidentiality at all times
• Ability to use tact and good judgement in dealing with sensitive and complex issues
• Passionate about community engagement, and enjoys working with a range of community members (youth, Elders, etc.)
• Strong organizational skills and attention to detail, especially in note-taking
• Ability to work both independently and within a team environment
• Ability to do door-to-door canvassing to households for several hours at a time
• Willingness to maintain a flexible schedule (including evenings and weekends) to accommodate community outreach and engagement
• Ability to prioritize and work effectively under pressure to meet deadlines
• Knowledge of Musqueam community and culture preferred

Working Conditions

• Work is performed in an office environment as well as outdoors
• The role may require working outside regular business hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays in order to maximize outreach
• Census survey training will be provided, including data collection, cultural and emotional safety, and communication skills
• Census Data Collectors will work in a team of two when conducting any work outside the office (such as door-to-door canvassing and community events)
• Depending on households, door-to-door canvassing may include requiring to navigate stairs, ramps, and/or gates
• Must sign a confidentiality agreement
• Successful Criminal Record Check

Period of employment: May to August 2024 (16 weeks)

Pay: $24.08 per hour
